A backyard transformation for an established Sandy home on a wooded lot — featuring a custom multi-tier natural sandstone waterfall, curved paver patio with seating, a white gazebo nestled among mature oaks and pines, natural stone steps and boulder retaining walls, flagstone-and-gravel pathways, and a vine-covered arbor.
Scope of Work
Natural Stone Waterfall & Water Feature
Built a custom multi-tier waterfall from locally sourced natural sandstone, cascading through several drops into a lower catch basin as the backyard's centerpiece.
Installed a recirculating pump system, basin, and concealed plumbing for continuous, quiet water flow throughout the season.
Set the waterfall into a planted slope with boulders and groundcover so it reads as a natural part of the wooded lot rather than a built feature.
Paver Patio & Gazebo
Laid a curved paver patio with built-in seating areas, shaped to follow the natural contours of the lot and the mature trees.
Set a white gazebo nestled among the existing oaks and pines as a shaded destination and focal point at the rear of the yard.
Connected the patio, gazebo, and home with clean paver transitions for an easy flow between gathering areas.
Stonework, Steps & Pathways
Constructed natural stone steps and boulder retaining walls to manage the grade changes across the wooded lot and create usable terraced levels.
Installed flagstone-and-gravel pathways winding through the garden to connect the waterfall, patio, and gazebo.
Placed accent boulders and stone detailing throughout to reinforce the natural, established character of the landscape.
Plantings & Finishing Details
Added a vine-covered arbor and layered plantings of shade-tolerant perennials, shrubs, and groundcover suited to the tree canopy.
Preserved and worked around the mature oaks and pines to keep the lot's wooded, private feel intact.
Installed irrigation and low-voltage lighting across the pathways, waterfall, and gazebo for evening ambiance and easy upkeep.
Results
Private Wooded Retreat: The waterfall, gazebo, and stonework transform the backyard into a secluded, resort-like escape within the mature tree canopy.
Natural Integration: Sandstone, boulders, and flagstone pathways blend the new construction seamlessly into the established wooded lot.
Functional Terracing: Stone steps and boulder retaining walls turn the lot's grade changes into usable, connected outdoor spaces.
Year-Round Character: Shade-adapted plantings, the vine-covered arbor, and evening lighting keep the landscape inviting through every season.
